Domestic Work, Imperialism and Independent Organization

One Struggle Miami attended an event put on by the Miami Workers Center, WeCount and other local non-profits to announce the commencement of a campaign advocating for a Domestic Worker’s Bill of Rights. Domestic laborers, local union members and politicians spoke on the importance of domestic work and their right to “Protection! Dignity! Respect!” The politicians retreated into the air conditioning and the rest of us marched through downtown. One Struggle’s goal in going was to meet people who see that there is a connection between the struggle of these laborers and the wider resistance that must be waged against capitalism and imperialism. We are seeking the most progressive elements across different struggles to build a network of organized resistance to represent the people’s interests. That means organization that is collective, democratic and independent.

One Struggle supports the organization of workers and their fight for their needs to be met, but we see that when these fights are taken up by the Democratic or Republican parties they are used as a stage to get political clout to cash in on in election season. When NGOs take up the fight, it becomes about ensuring the continued funding of the NGO by the state, not about addressing class conditions. In 2022 Miami Worker’s Center played a part in passing a Tenant’s Bill of Rights that at its outset was unenforceable in the courts, and was eventually rendered useless by a state bill passed by DeSantis. Pandering to politicians isn’t going to get us the movement that our lives and future depend on. We need to be organizing independent from capitalist interest to build sustainable, progressive resistance.

The following is a flyer that was passed to laborers and sympathizers at the event.
