Kenbe Fèm: Film Screening and Discussion with a Member of Batay Ouvriye

Join One Struggle South Florida for a screening of the short film Batay La – a look into the efforts of the workers organization Batay Ouvriye to build independent organization among workers and laborers in Haiti!

We are very pleased to have the opportunity to speak with Batay Ouvriye organizer and associate producer of the film, Yannick Etienne, who has traveled from Haiti to join the discussion about international solidarity. Come out Saturday September 25th in downtown Miami. We’ll also be collecting donations for Batay Ouvriye as part of the fundraiser through the Rapid Response Network, which lends immediate and direct solidarity to workers and laborers.

Masks are mandatory! The event will be held indoors in a venue with high ceilings, multiple fans and a garage door that will remain open for circulation.

Around the world we continue to see disasters that only seem to spread further and grow more dire. We pull our efforts together and help whoever needs it the most, but we scramble disorganized and with only short term goals that don’t focus on the roots of climate change, the pandemic, and the erosion of our rights. We may understand the power of political unity and international solidarity – but how do we go about building organizations that can work together to weaken the structures and forces that are killing us?

While we can struggle to fortify and organize ourselves here, we also take inspiration from workers and laborers all over the world fighting against imperialism. That’s why One Struggle is screening Batay La, a short documentary focused on Haitian worker’s organization, Batay Ouvriye. People say that Haiti is cursed, corrupt or just doomed but if we can acknowledge the internal history of class struggle on the island and the influence of institutions like the IMF and World Bank on their development, it becomes obvious that the conditions they suffer are by design. Local capitalists and international imperialists brutally exploit the workers and laborers of the country, but despite this we see solidarity, resistance and organization that the whole world can learn from.

Come to join the discussion and bring a friend! RSVP via Eventbrite
